The autumn London photography exhibition program is now in full swing with some top exhibitions from UK and international photographers. At the Michael Hoppen Gallery, in Chelsea, alone there are two exhibitions from acclaimed photographers: Lucas Folgia and Mountains of Kong from British photographer Jim Naughten. Finnish abstract photographer from the feted Helsinki School has a new exhibition of abstracts at the Atlas Gallery. For something even more different go to the National Portrait Gallery a look at the modern ‘typical’ British family by Sian Davey. The pop up display stars families from Devon to the Hebrides.

Luxury Fashion House Burberry has mounted a photo exhibition to coincide with London Fashion Week. The exhibition is on at 18th Century, Grade II listed Old Sessions House in Clerkenwell. Bill Brandt, Roger Mayne, Tony Ray Jones and Martin Parr all feature in ‘Here We Are’ which explores the ‘British way of life‘. This is an impressive collection of the UK’s most influential photographers.
Old Sessions House is in Clerkenwell and a short walk from Farringdon or Barbican London Underground stations.

We Are Family

We Are Family takes a rather interesting look at the modern British family. British documentary photographer Sian Davey travelled to opposite ends of the country, with stops in between to challenge ideas on motherhood, fatherhood and ‘teeangehood’.
The National Portrait Gallery is on St. Martin’s Place in the West End and a short walk from either Leicester Square or Charing Cross underground stations.

Lucas Foglia: Human Nature
Free admission.
Lucas Foglia, the American photographer studied at Yale, and was taught by Gregory Crewdson (details below of Crewdson’s current London photography exhibition at the Photographers’ Gallery). Foglia grew up on a farm just thirty miles from Manhattan. Himself coming from an environment which sough self-sustainability, he went in search of self sustainable communities for his book ‘A Natural Order‘. This new London photography exhibition, Human Nature, concerns itself with similar themes with Foglia exploring the forces of modernity and nature, which at times are conflicting.
The Michael Hoppen Gallery is in Chelsea, just off the King’s Road, a short walk from South Kensington tube station or slightly further from Sloane Square.

Niko Luoma: Rhythm Direction and Weight
Just opened.

Niko Luoma is a Finnish photographer from the Helsinki School which is known for aesthetic awareness. Luoma makes abstract adaptions of well-known art pieces including Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh. His unique process has made him one of the most exciting contemporary photographers. This is his second exhibition at Atlas Gallery.
The Atlas Gallery is on Dorset Street in Marylebone, a few minutes walk from Baker Street tube station. Rococo Chocolate Shop and café is also not far if you fancy a nice hot chocolate after seeing the show.

Jim Naughten: Mountains of Kong
Photographer Jim Naugten takes you on a fantastical journey to the fabled Mountains of Kong. Originally thought to exist in western Africa, the Mountains of Kong appeared on Victorian maps. Naugten has resurrected Victorian stereoscopic technology to create his three-dimensional vision of the fabled `mountain range. He actually captured images of Welsh and Scottish mountains and compositing these less exotic images with dioramas from natural history museums in Photoshop to create this vision of the Majestic Mountains.

Jean-Marie Périer: Designers

French photographer Jean-Marie Perier comes to London for his first UK solo exhibition. The Little Black Gallery presents Designers – photographers showcasing icons of the fashion industry.

Zanele Muholi: Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness
Free admission.
South African artist Zanele Muholi presents 60 images in her first U.K. solo exhibition. The images use her own body as a canvas to confront the politics of race.
Rivington Place is in Shoreditch, a short walk from Shoreditch High Street London Overground station. You might consider stopping off at Boxpark, a pop-up shopping centre, on the walk back to the station for a coffee.

Gregory Crewdson: Cathedral of Pines
Free admission before noon every day.
Gregory Crewdson is an American photographer known for his almost cinematic, staged photo shoots of small town America. Probably his best known and most widely acclaimed bodies of work include Natural Wonder, Twilight, Dream House. Cathedral Pines is a new body of work shot during three productions in Becket Massachusetts. This is Crewdson’s first ever UK solo exhibition. In another first, London’s Photographers’ Gallery presents the work over three exhibition space in the gallery.
The Photographers’ Gallery is by Liberty of London, not far from either Oxford Street or Regent Street. The gallery has a great café which also serves nice salads, and slightly less healthy treats!

Daido Moriyama
Free admission.
Daido Moriyama is a Japanese photographer probably best known for his style of black and white street photography cataloguing the breakdown of traditional values in modern Japan. He counts William Klein and Eikoh Hosoe as his principal influences: he worked as an assistant to Eikoh Hosoe.
This is a permanent display in the Tate Modern in the Artist rooms. In addition to prints of famous Moriyama images hung on the walls, there is a looping projection of dozens of other images – all inspiring.
Tate Modern is on the South Bank of the Thames, and just a few minutes’ walk from St. Paul’s tube station. The shows seems like a perfect drop-in on a walk along the South Bank on a a sunny day.

A Century of Photography

The National Portrait Gallery celebrates photography with an exhibition sourced exclusively from its own Photographs Collection. The display includes work from international as well as UK photographers. Visitors can see work from American Edmund Clark and Swede Oscar Rejlander as well as well as British Julia Margaret Cameron and Lewis Carroll.
