Petworth House is a 17th century, Grade I listed country house in West Sussex. Today Petworth House and Park are in the care of the National Trust. Over the years they have been owned by earls, dukes and royal relatives. The House is set in a large deer park. There were previously elaborate Elizabethan gardens where that Capability Brown landscaped park now lies. The manor house at that time, which predates the current Petworth House, was a gift from Henry I’s wife to her brother in 1150.
As beautiful as Petworth House is from the outside, it is inside where you will find the greatest gems. The manor houses the National Trust’s finest art collection. An English ‘Versailles’, Petworth is know for the collection of work by Titian, van Dyck and Reynolds as well as Flexman. The collection will be augmented next year when Petworth House hosts an exhibition of Dutch Paintings from National Trust Houses.
Although entry to Petworth House is only accessible for free to National Trust members, anyone can access Petworth Park. There is a nice Petworth Park circular walk, popular with families on which you can explore ancient trees, see deer or just take in the views afforded by the Capability Brown landscaping.
This is a shot I took with a medium format analogue camera on Fomapan Ultra 400 film. I was impressed with the depth of field the 75mm lens was possible to achieve with everything from the wall in the foreground back to Petworth House itself in focus.
